The Herald recently featured a feature about Ryan Quigley’s big band project with ex-Del Amitri singer Justin Currie. It later included a review of the band’s Musselburgh gig. Euphbass was at the Easterhouse one. The band also get mentioned in an Aberdeen Press and Journal feature about the Tune Up project.
Another pop musician now working in a jazzier field is ex-Special Jerry Dammers, whose Spatial A.K.A Orchestra is playing at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on the 31st. The band’s apparently strongly influenced by Sun Ra’s various Arkestras, and includes such jazz talent as Zoe Rahman on piano, saxophonists Nathaniel Facey, Jason Yarde, Larry Stabbins and Denys Baptiste, and vibist Roger Beaujolais. Jerry Dammers talks about the project in the Herald. There are some short clips of the Spatial A.K.A Orchestra in action on the Gateshead International Jazz Festival website.
The Edinburgh gig by former EST bass player Dan Berglund and his current band Tonbruket got reviewed in the Scotsman and the Herald.
Rachel Z’s trio with Omar Hakim also got a review in the Herald. They apparently call themselves the Trio of Oz, which confused me when I first saw the review headline, as I would expect a band with that name to be Australian.
Jacques Loussier’s trio got a 4-star review in the Herald from Alison Kerr, but it isn’t available online.
