According to the printed Glasgow Jazz Festival programme, there are to be some “Jazz on Film” events at Cineworld during this year’s festival. Unfortunately, there’s no indication on the festival or Cineworld websites (Renfrew Street and Parkhead schedules) of any such films.
However, the Glasgow Film Theatre comes to the rescue of jazz-loving film buffs with a couple of films on this week, which although not officially part of the festival, link in with it quite nicely.
On Tuesday evening, they’re showing “Solidarity Song: The Hanns Eisler Story”, a biography of the German composer, communist and Brecht-collaborator. Eisler obviously wasn’t a jazz musician himself, but on Friday night the band Das Kapital will be playing his music at the Recital Room. (Bobo Stenson also recorded a couple of Eisler’s tunes on his Serenity album).
On Wednesday and Thursday, you get the chance to see “The Man with the Jazz Guitar”, a biography of jazz guitarist, broadcaster and chef Ken Sykora. It’s on in the early evening on Wednesday and twice on Thursday, at 3.15pm and 20.25pm.
