Well, I did say it was a busy week…

I’ve just found out about another quality gig that’s on in the next few days.

David Newton is guesting with the Bobby Wishart Quartet at Glasgow Art Club in Bath Street on Thursday night. The concert starts at 8pm and tickets are £8 (£6 concessions).

David Newton needs little introduction: he’s one of the UK’s top jazz pianists, a player who combines great delicacy with fierce swing. Bobby Wishart has been a fixture on the Scottish jazz scene for longer than I can remember: a fine tenor player (and also a not bad pianist) who, rather like Stewart Forbes, has in recent years spent as much time teaching as gigging. The band is completed by brothers Gino and Sandro Ciancio (keyboards and drums) and bassist Andrew Sharkey. It’s an unusual line-up, with both keyboards and piano in it, so it will be interesting to hear how it works.

The band will also be playing at the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
