From 4.30pm on Friday 23rd March until Saturday 31st of March, BBC Radio Three will be devoting its entire schedule to the music of Schubert. They will be playing nothing else.

Jazz Record Requests will be cancelled and replaced by Schubert.

Jazz Library will be cancelled and replaced by Schubert.

Jazz Line-up will be cancelled and replaced by Schubert.

Jazz on Three will be cancelled and replaced by Schubert.

Now, I don’t mind a bit of Schubert now and again, and it’s great to see that, despite a worrying obsession with Twitter, Radio Three isn’t dumbing down and concentrating solely on attracting as many listeners as possible. But eight-and-a-half days of German avant-garde jazz and free improvisation? Isn’t that aiming at a bit of a niche market?
