There’s been a shortage of jazz gigs recently, so it seems almost inevitable that on Friday night there will be at two on at the same time. However, they’re by artists with very different styles so there might not be too many people who want to go to both.
Australian singer and pianist Janet Seidel is appearing at the Recital Room in City Halls with her trio, performing songs by Johnny Mercer. It starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £13.
At much the same time, Scandinavian free jazz noiseniks The Thing are appearing at Platform in Easterhouse, as part of “Eastern Promise“, a two-day festival of what I suppose can best be described as the type of music they write about in “Wire”: alt rock, free improvisation, electronica, experimental pop, that sort of thing. The full line-up is:
- The Thing (Mats Gustafsson reeds, Paal Nilssen-Love drums and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten bass)
- Withered Hand
- Nancy Elizabeth
- To Rococo Rot
- The Pastels
- Silje Nes
- Conquering Animal Sound
- Animal Magic Tricks
It looks a really interesting line-up, the sort of thing the CCA or Tramway might have put on in the days when they hosted more live music. Tickets are £10 per night, or £15 for a weekend ticket. Doors open at 7pm, and there are buses being put on which run directly to the venue from Monorail in the city centre. They cost £4 return.
In case you haven’t decided which you want to go to hear, here’s Janet Seidel…
