One of my favourite trumpeters, Cootie Williams, was born 100 years ago today in Mobile, Alabama, and died in New York in 1985.

Noted for his plunger mute work, Williams spent several spells in the Duke Ellington band (Ellington wrote “Concerto for Cootie” for him). Away from Ellington, he led various bands of his own, was a member of the great Benny Goodman sextet with Charlie Christian, and co-wrote “Round Midnight” with Thelonious Monk.
