Public voting is now open for the Scottish Jazz Awards 2011, organised by the Scottish Jazz Federation and Jazz International.

Oddly enough, while there are three separate awards for bands (early jazz, mainstream and contemporary), there’s only one for best instrumentalist, which means trumpeters, guitarists and pianists are all lumped in together.

Nominations in some of the key categories are:
Best instrumentalist

  • Graeme Stephen
  • Brian Kellock
  • Colin Steele
  • Tommy Smith

Best CD

  • Neil Warden Blue Soul Groove
  • Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra featuring Duke Heitger Celebrating Satchmo
  • Tommy Smith and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra Torah
  • Euan Burton – Tom Gibbs Group Forgotten Things
  • Brass Jaw Branded

You can find the full list of nominees and vote online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FVDH799 until June 7th. It’s a first past the post election, even if you live in Glasgow Kelvin.

The winners will be announced, and the awards presented, at the Tron Theatre on June 28th. More details on the Scottish Jazz Federation website.
