I forgot to mention in my last post: the Glasgow Film Theatre is one of the cinemas showing a live satellite relay of Jamie Cullum’s solo set from the Cheltenham Jazz Festival this Sunday. It’s at 8.30pm, and tickets cost £15 (£13/£12 concessions).
Apparently he’s not going to be touring the UK this year, so if you’re a Cullum fan this might well be your only chance to see him in Glasgow this year.
Cullum’s the guest director of this year’s Cheltenham Festival, and although I find his own music a bit bland, there’s no denying he’s got a genuine commitment to jazz. Some of the other bands on at Cheltenham are Big Air, Pharoah Sanders, Django Bates, Phronesis and a quartet of Larry Grenadier, Chris Potter, Eric Harland and Jason Moran. That’s not the selection of someone who’s not serious about the music.
