Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday, which means that today is Rosenmontag in Cologne, home to the largest Karneval in Europe (and a major European jazz centre). Here’s something suitably rowdy to celebrate the event, from that city’s Schäl Sick Brass Band. Okay, maybe their blend of German oompah band, New Orleans marching band and Middle Eastern folk music isn’t 100% jazz, but it’s great fun. Any chance of getting them for the Jazz Festival or Celtic Connections?
The “Schäl Sick” incidentally, is the Cologne dialect term for the unfashionable part of the city on the “wrong”, ie Right, bank of the Rhine, across the river from the city centre. And remember, “Think global, blow local!” Kölle Alaaf!
