Well, I don’t. He died before I was born. But I’ve heard his music.

Clifford Brown was born 80 years ago today, October 30th 1930, and died far too young in a car crash on June 26th 1956. He was one of the all-time great trumpeters and, by all accounts, a lovely person and a great role model for his contemporaries.

This biography of him in the Washington Post is far better than anything I can come up with.

Unfortunately the sound and picture quality’s not all that good, so all I can say is that if you’ve not got at least one recording by him in your collection, you should have.
