There seems to be some sort of arts thing on in Edinburgh at the moment. One event there which hasn’t got much attention is Russian ex Jazz Messenger Valery Ponomarev’s series of concerts at the Jazz Bar in Chambers Street. He’s playing there in a quintet with New York saxophonist Tim Armacost from tonight through until Sunday, and he and Armacost will be guesting with the Jazz Bar Big Band on Monday night.

The Jazz Bar was closed for a few days because of a burst pipe, but is now open again as usual. They’ve got lots of other good stuff on as well, including the Brian Kellock Trio on Saturday night. Kellock’s on from 7.30 to 8.30, and then Ponomarev comes on at 9pm. It almost – but only almost – makes dealing with the madness that is Edinburgh during the Festival worthwhile.
