Tomorrow, Sunday the 25th, the Vale Bar is putting on another of its occasional jazz gigs. This looks like a good one: vibes player Jim Hart is appearing there with a band featuring New York trumpeter Ralph Alessi. I don’t know very much about Alessi, but his discography indicates that he moves in some serious circles in the States. His albums as leader include Ravi Coltrane, Jason Moran, Don Byron and Mark Helias in the bands, and he’s also recorded as a sideman with Uri Caine, Steve Coleman and Sam Rivers. Even without Alessi, this would be a group well worth catching: Michael Janisch is on bass and Dave Smith on drums.
Jim Hart talks about the band and about how excited he is to be working with Ralph Alessi, in the London Jazz Blog, which also has a review of the first night of their tour. John Fordham of the Guardian picked out their tour as one of the week’s top live music events.
Starting time for gigs at the Vale is usually 8pm. I don’t know what the ticket price is going to be. As well as this Glasgow appearance, they’re playing the Jazz Bar in Chambers Street in Edinburgh tonight.
