The 8th of March is International Women’s Day. So, to mark the occasion, I thought I’d point you towards some clips of female jazz musicians in action. They all will all open in a new window or tab.

  • Carla Bley. Composer, pianist and band leader. “Who Will Rescue You?” by her Very Big Band.
  • Nicole Mitchell. Flautist, band leader and current president of the AACM. Don’t know much about her, but I like this track by her Black Earth Ensemble.
  • Mary Lou Williams. Arranger, who worked with Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, and a great bluesy pianist, as this Solo Blues Piano performance demonstrates.
  • Joanne Brackeen. Another fine pianist, who’s worked with Joe Henderson and Stan Getz as well as being the only woman ever to have been a member of the Jazz Messengers. Her Special Identity album from the 80s is a neglected classic. Here she is playing her own composition “Filenes“.
