Part of Jazz from Sweden

This was very much a collaborative effort, with the material being split almost equally between tunes by Laura Macdonald and tunes by Martina Almgren. It was Almgren’s material which made the bigger impression, with “Bingo” (the title track of her latest album) and “The Saddest Song of All” sounding particularly impressive. She’s also a very fine drummer with a good crisp sound. You always noticed her playing, even when she was using brushes, but was never overpowering. Overall, a pretty good concert, but one which just lacked the final spark, with pianist Paul Harrison seeming a bit subdued throughout. Maybe they just needed to have played together a bit longer as a unit: I think this was only their third gig.
