February sees a “Jazz from Sweden” event taking place in various places in Scotland, not just in the cities but in smaller towns from Stonehaven to Langholm. There are several big names, notably EST, Ulf Wakenius and Bent Persson, plus some I’ve never heard of but am interested in hearing.

There’s some interaction with local musicians as well: Laura MacDonald teaming up with drummer Martina Almgren; a Jan Allan – Brian Kellock Quartet; and Steve Hamilton backing singer Jeanette Lindstrom. Most of the Glasgow concerts are in the Recital Room at the City Halls, but the EST with Viktoria Tolstoy one is on at the Old Fruitmarket. Once again, though, the “jazz concerts are like busses” maxim applies, as Tam White and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra are on at the same time elsewhere in town.
