Old Fruitmarket, 30th June 2006, Glasgow Jazz Festival
This was one of these concerts about which it’s difficult to say much more than “it was very good”. Hargrove and his band played a set of straightahead contemporary hard bop, most of the material consisting of originals which sounded perfectly fine at the time, but left no real impression afterwards. Hargrove is a fabulous trumpeter, who can play quietly and lyrically, or with a bright aggressive swing, and is able to combine both aspects of his style in the one number, or to switch from one mode to the other within a few bars. The other standout musician was alto player Justin Robinson. The pianist, bass player and drummer were, by contrast, technically excellent, but slightly anonymous. Overall, a very enjoyable night’s music, without being particularly memorable.
