Lockerbie Jazz Festival October 15, 2006

The Lockerbie Jazz Festival is on from Friday 26th to Sunday 29th October. The two big name evening concerts are the Humphrey Lyttleton Band on Saturday 28th and the Colin Steele Quintet on Sunday 29th, but there are a lot of other interesting things on throughout the weekend, featuring folk like Warren Vache, Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen and Brian Kellock. The concert by the Alan Barnes – Warren Vache Sextet at lunchtime on the Saturday looks particularly good. There are also appearances by local musicians, including a saxophonist called Leah Gough Cooper, who I’ve never heard of, but is one of the growing list of Scottish musicians who have studied at Berklee. If the train service was a bit better I might try and get down for some of it myself.
The details are at www.lockerbiejazz.com.
I played in 2 of the events and went to see Steele’s Quintet (very very good) and i have to say that i enjoyed it a lot. I am a 15 year old saxophonist who plays with the Dumfries Youth Jazz Band and we kicked off the weekend on the Friday night with Leah Gough Cooper, Alan Blair and Paul Towdrow playing with us to a decent reception. I also played with a couple of guys from my ‘real’ band, Section Perfection, with the Euan Stevenson Trio with Ben Bryden and it all went well. (plus it gave our new sextet some media attention!)
We’re supporting Mario Caribe at a great wee place in Dumfries called ‘Rifft Valley’ on the 12th so come down for that anybody, not for us, but for the fantastic Mario and his Quartet.
See you there ;-)
